The preparation should not be used for children under the age of two years without the consent of a physician. It should be stored out of the reach of children. Bio-C-Vitamin is a mono-preparation that contains 750 mg of vitamin C and 85 mg of calcium per tablet in the form of calcium ascorbate. Calcium ascorbate has been chosen as the source of vitamin C, because it is a more acid-neutral form that does not change the pH in the stomach. More and more studies indicate that there are beneficial effects of ingesting vitamin C in doses that are considerably higher than the current recommended daily allowances [6,11,12,13]. Some of these studies are summarized below. Exogenously supplied vitamin C is an essential micronutrient for the human organism that cannot synthesize the substance itself. The vitamin functions as a co-factor in various enzyme processes [2,3,4]. Propylhydroxylase, for example, which assists in the hydroxylation of freshly synthesized connective tissue protein (collagen), is maintained in its active form by vitamin C. If the collagen in connective tissue is not sufficiently hydroxylated due to a deficiency of vitamin C, then scurvy-like symptoms will develop.
