The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) in the United Kingdom (UK) has approved Pycnogenol® as a food ingredient as well as a dietary supplement, a ruling which allows the incorporation of the substance into functional foods in the UK without any restrictions. General information Bio-Pycnogenol® (which is pronounced Pik-nah-je-nol) is produced using an extract from the bark of the French maritime pine tree (Pinus maritima) from the Landes de Gascogne in France, an area free of pesticides and fertilizers. The extract is an organic substance. The recommended dosage of Bio-Pycnogenol® is two tablets twice daily in the first week of usage followed by one tablet twice daily. Each tablet contains 40 mg of Pycnogenol®. Bio-Pycnogenol® consists of a mixture of naturally-occurring, water-soluble phenolic acids, polyphenolic compounds and their glucosylated derivatives and free sugars. The most relevant ingredients belong to a class of flavonoids called proanthocyanidins that include catechins, epicatechins and taxifolins [11, s. 5-7]. The proanthocyanidins in Bio-Pycnogenol® represent a very specialized group of bio-flavonoids that are unique in their ability to form condensation reaction products, a property that contributes to the relatively high absorbability and biological activity of the proanthocyanidins [9, s. 51]. Research results have indicated that Pycnogenol® can be used as an antioxidant to protect the cells against the damaging effects of free radicals, to recycle and prolong the use of vitamins C and E, and to strengthen and improve blood circulation [2,6,10].
