Anthocyanidins (also known as OPC`s and pycnogenols or leucocyanidins) are similar in structure to bioflavonoids but are believed by many researchers to be much more bioactive. This is likely to be due to their high solubility which enables them to be well absorbed and dispersed throughout the body with ease. Cranberry juice has long been known to women for its ability to help maintain the health of the urinary system. Pycnogenol is a remarkable herbal extract with the unique primary ingredient known as Proanthocyanidin, which in molecular structure is similar to flavonoids. Its unique action, however, is due to its bio availability and non-toxicity. Pycnogenol first came to be researched by Dr Jack Masquelier of the University of Bordeaux, France, after he read of an unknown substance being used successfully by members of an expedition. His research concentrated on the naturally derived proanthocyanidins in Pycnogenol, which are found to have supreme effects as anti-oxidants. In vitro testing shows Pycnogenol has powerful anti-oxidant properties like those of Vitamins C and E.
