Bio-Carnitine is a nutritional supplement preparation containing the amino acid L-carnitine. Carnitine is naturally synthesized in the body from the amino acids lysine and Methionine. In addition, 100-300 mg of carnitine are obtained daily from food, primarily from meat. Carnitine is an important factor in energy metabolism in the cells of the body.


When carbohydrates are used as a source of energy, they are converted into pyruvate in the cytosol of the cell. From here pyruvate enters the mitochondria, where it is processed further and eventually converted into energy (ATP). Carbohydrates are most important as an energy source for the central nervous system and in the muscles during short periods of strenuous exercise.


In muscles working at a steady pace, on the other hand, fatty acids are the primary source of energy. Long chain fatty acids from the food are activated on the outer mitochondrial membrane. The activated fatty acids, however, can not easily cross the inner membrane of the mitochondria but need a transportation system, in which carnitine is an important component.


Carnitine transports the long chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane into the inner compartment, where they are degraded and eventually used in energy production. It can be seen that exogenous carnitine plays a special role in its influence on the rate of free fatty acid metabolism

Bio-Sport has been approved by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration as a nutritional supplement. It has been marketed since 1999.

Because of regulatory differences from country to country, the dosages in this preparation may vary in some countries. In some countries, a preparation similar to Bio-Sport called EPA-Glandin (fish oil and gamma-linolenic acid without the antioxidants) is marketed.

General information

The Bio-Sport preparation consists of the essential fatty acids gamma-linolenic acid (GLA, from borage oil) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), both derived from fish oil from menhaden herring, sardines, mackerel and salmon, in a soft-gelatine capsule and an antioxidant complex tablet. The fatty acids are precursors for the formation of beneficial eicosanoids that have a modulating effect on inflammation.

The fish oil in Bio-Sport contains n-3 fatty acids in the form of free fatty acids rather than in the form of triglycerides. Fish oil taken in the form of free fatty acids have been shown to be more easily absorbed than fish oil in the form of triglycerides or in ester form [5,10].

The daily dosage of Bio-Sport consists of eight capsules and one tablet which, together, contain the following substances:

Vitamin A 1000 mcg
Vitamin B6 2.2 mg
Vitamin C 90 mg
Vitamin E 15 mg
Zinc 15 mg
Selenium 100 mcg
n-3 fatty acids 706 mg total
of which: EPA 372 mg
DHA 260 mg

n-6 fatty acids (GLA) 672 mg The borage oil is stabilized with 0.005 % dl-alpha tocopherol and 0.02 % ascorbylpalmitate. The fish oil is stabilized with 1 IU/g d-alpha-tocopherol.

The selenium in the preparation has a positive effect on a number of disease-promoting factors that, among other things, are important in the development of many forms of cancer.

SelenoPrecise® is a selenium yeast mono-preparation that contains 100 µg of organically bound selenium per tablet. SelenoPrecise® meets the body`s basic requirements for the essential mineral selenium. The average Danish intake of selenium on a daily basis, for example, is 42 micrograms, one of the lowest levels in Europe NETQUOTEVAR:62.


The balance between protective antioxidants and harmful free radicals in the body plays a central role for the organism`s disposition to health and disease [3,5]. Selenium is incorporated into enzymes that function as antioxidants, and, in this way, it participates in the protection of the organism against oxidative cell damage [1,51].
